The Stingers were founded in 1993 under the guidance of Chris Pye, and were initially coached by ex- NFL Europa London Monarchs player Todd Oberdorf. They quickly gained support from several local companies, and obtained enough kit and players to join the BCAFL for the 1994-95 season. The Stingers played their first game, a friendly against then division rivals Hertfordshire in May 1994. The Stingers have reached the playoffs on two occasions and claimed the Southern Division title twice. One of these occasions saw the Stingers go undefeated, the only team in the league to achieve such a feat that season.
The 2007-2008 season will see the team move to a new strip, wearing university colours for the first time in club history. This is in conjunction with a complete rebranding, including new logo, with the traditional cartoon Stinger becoming the official image for the University of Surrey Stingers Old Boys team.
We Stingers are one of the most prominent sports clubs in the University of Surrey and the British Universities American Football League (BUAFL). The club is very sociable with excellent coaches and we provide all the equipment you'll need to be able to play the sport. Experience is not necessary and the team welcomes players of all sizes, shapes and levels of fitness.
